Tassel Class

Natalie Portman has been spotted wearing these awesome tassel earrings on the red carpet, and now you can create your own to wear too! Suzy Schuman will show you how to make these tassels that you can make into earrings or as a focal piece on a necklace. Make beaded tassels, or with leather, suede, deerskin, or other cords or strings.

Nunn Design Deerskin Tassels

Prerequisite: Basic Earring & Wire Class, Basic Wire Wrap Class, or Wire Work Necklace Class or equivalent. (Student should be familiar with making a wire wrap.) Note: If you do not know how to do a wire wrap, you can either sign up for one of the classes listed above, or take a 1-hour private lesson before the class.

Materials Needed:

  • Artistic Wire 20 -24 gauge will be needed for all tassels.
  • Nymo Thread (Size B or D) is required for all beaded tassels
  • Size 10 or 12 Beading Needle is required for all beaded tassels
  • 2 x Ear Wires are required for tassel earrings.
  • Bead Cones will be required for all tassels.
    • For tassel earrings 7 – 9 mm
    • For beaded focal tassel 9mm or larger depending on bead size and how many tassels you would like.
    • For leather tassel 9mm or larger depending on size of leather and number of tassels you would  like.
    • For silk or embroidery silk, 7mm – 9mm.
  • Embellishment beads and bead caps are optional on all tassels (for placement above the bead cone)
  • Beaded Tassel Earrings require 8.g gram tube of size 11 seed beads (preferably round, Miyuki)  Note –you can choose smaller size seed beads if you prefer, but size 11 is a good size to start with!  You may also use gemstones.  2mm round gemstones work best, but require a smaller beading needle.  (size 13)
  • You can use 2 – 3 mm Czech glass beads or gem stones to make the beaded tassels (not earrings).  You may also use seed beads.
  • You can make tassels out of 5mm deerskin leather.  This is the flat, suede/leather.  A tassel using a 9mm bead cone will take require a minimum of 18 inches of leather.
  • You can make tassels out of round leather using .5 – 1.5 mm leather.  A  tassel using a 9 mm bead cone will require 36 inches of 1.5 mm leather.  For smaller leather, you will be able to accoomodate more tassels so more leather will be required.  (Please choose leather that is soft and supple so it hangs nicely.)
  • For tassels made out of embroidery thread, you can use one hank of thread to make two 3 inch tassels, or one longer tassel.  (Note – I like to choose embroidery thread with a satin finish.)

Tools will be provided for the classroom session, but if you would like to make these outside of the class you should have a round nose plier, chain nose plier, nylon jaw plier, scissors or thread nippers, ruler, and a bead mat.
